FROM THE LAY DIRECTOR "Be Still And Know That I Am God"

Updated: 5 days ago

Life moves fast and most of us juggle many activities and wear many hats. It is easy to become overwhelmed by the noise and distractions that pull us in many directions.  Fears, responsibilities, worries, and the ever-present demands of life can often leave us feeling restless and anxious. But even in the midst of all this, God calls us to a place of peace and trust with His simple yet profound command: "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10, NIV).

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that our hearts and minds need to find rest in the presence of God. The command to "be still" is not just about physical stillness but about quieting our minds before Him. It is about surrendering our fears, anxieties, and uncertainties into His hands, recognizing that He is in control over all things. I like the quote, “I can’t, but I know a guy.” Having the wisdom and discernment to lean on God can help to bring peace.

When we lean on God, we acknowledge that our own strength is not enough. We are not meant to carry the burdens of life alone. Having strong reunion group brothers or sisters can also be helpful to be able to talk through many issues in our lives and listen and support others as well. This is helpful so that we don’t feel alone in our battles.   Jesus Himself offers us a beautiful invitation: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, NIV). This promise reminds us that true rest is found in Him. When we trust in God's presence and lean on His strength, He quiets the storms within us and fills us with His perfect peace.

We are all aware of the endless distractions in life and so hearing God’s voice requires intentional effort. We should set aside time to be in His presence and study on His Word, and to listen in prayer. For me, quiet time in the morning before my workday gets underway is when I can carve out some time for reflection. When our minds are cluttered with worries, and busyness, it becomes difficult to discern His guidance. When we intentionally take the time to be still, we are making room for His voice to help bring clarity and direction.

God desires to speak to us, to lead us, and to remind us of His love and faithfulness. The more we can make the habit of being still in His presence, the more aware we become of His voice. This does not mean that challenges will disappear, but it does mean that we will be equipped with His peace and wisdom to navigate accordingly.

As we all walk through life’s uncertainties, let us remember the invitation to be still before God. Let us lean on Him when our minds feel overwhelmed and anxious. For we know that God is our source of strength and is ever-present in times of trouble. By intentionally turning our focus to Him, we find the peace that surpasses all understanding and the assurance that He is always in control. May we take moments each day to pause, breathe, and rest in the truth that He is God. For it is in the stillness that we will find Him—faithful, loving, and always near.

God loves you and so do I!
